Small Society Lotteries
Explanatory Notes for the Guidance of Local
Societies
Introduction
Schedule 11 of the Gambling Act 2005 authorises the conduct of
small society lotteries by societies established for permitted
purposes.
Societies must be established for:
- charitable purposes
- to enable support or participation in sports
- cultural activities for any other non-commercial purpose
other than that of private gain
The proceeds of any lottery must be devoted to these permitted
purposes.
The total value of tickets to be put on sale per single lottery
must be £20,000 or less, or the aggregate value of tickets to be
put on sale for all lotteries in a calendar year must not exceed
£250,000.
