Community safety

Broxbourne is a safe place to live, with relatively low levels of crime and disorder.  The aims and objectives for the Council in promoting community safety are as follows:

  • To promote pro-social behaviour
  • To actively assist in the reduction of crime and disorder within the Borough
  • To investigate and take prompt and reasoned action as and where necessary
  • To improve the environment to reduce the opportunities for crime and disorder
  • To initiate early intervention to prevent future, possibly more serious anti-social behaviour
  • To provide reasonable assistance to those reporting or committing anti-social behaviour, where appropriate
  • To actively work to promote tolerance between sections of the community to reduce the fear of crime and improve residents' quality of life.
  • To support and encourage the more vulnerable sectors of the community to report incidents targeted at them because of their race, gender or disability

The Broxbourne Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (BCDRP) which comprises the Council, the Police and other statutory agencies, is required by law to produce a community safety strategy every three years. In line with this responsibility the partnership produced a stategy for 2005 to 2008.  A new strategy for the period 2008-2011 is currently being compiled and will be published in the related links section on the right.

The new strategy will show how the Broxbourne Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (BCDRP) will prioritise its resources and respond to the findings of an annual strategic assessment and the community safety issues that are of most concern to those who live and work in the Borough.  It also takes into consideration all other relevant local, regional and national agendas.

Broxbourne remains a safe area in which to live and work but certain issues and concerns were identified which need to be tackled by partners. This Community Safety Strategy has the following overarching goals: to reduce crime and disorder, to safeguard communities and reduce fear of crime, to improve quality of life in the Borough.  The strategic assessment has highlighted local community safety priorities for 2008/09.

The key priorities are:

  • Reducing crime, particularly criminal damage, domestic burglary and vehicle crime
  • Tackling alcohol misuse
  • Tackling anti-social behaviour
  • Improving feelings of safety in the community

The Community Safety Strategy is a 'living document'.  This means that the Partnership constantly reviews the work it does and is, therefore, able to properly target resources to fight crime and disorder problems in the Borough.

Residents who would like more information about the Community Safety Strategy or have any questions on community safety should contact the community safety team at Broxbourne Council on 01992 785555 or email: community.safety@broxbourne.gov.uk
