Bullying

What is bullying?

Bullying usually occurs in schools but it can also occur at college, work or even at home. Bullying can consist of verbal abuse, physical violence, stealing and aggressive behaviour.

Why are people bullied?

There is no particular type of person that is bullied. People that are bullied can be shy, intelligent, sensitive or gentle and they are often just in the wrong place at the wrong time. To counteract bullies be assertive by learning to say no to the bully, and stand up to the bully but do not become aggressive yourself.

If you are being bullied should you tell somebody?

Always confide in somebody if you are being bullied. If nobody is aware that you are being bullied, nobody can help to stop the bully. Sharing a problem is a great way of beginning to solve a problem so talk to a parent, a teacher, a youth worker or somebody at work. If you are worried about approaching somebody, ask a friend or family member to go with you. If you feel that you are not being heard, make sure that you alert other people to the fact that you are being bullied.

What if I'm a bully?

Most people have bullied someone else at some time, whether they really meant to or not. Usually people feel sorry or bad about the way they have treated that person, but if bullying somebody doesn't make you guilty or sad, then you need to think about your actions.
