About the Borough of Broxbourne

The Borough of Broxbourne covers 20 square miles in south east Hertfordshire and has a population of about 93,700. Broxbourne's towns of Waltham Cross, Cheshunt, Broxbourne and Hoddesdon lie along the Lee Valley's main roads and railways. The green belt protects the surrounding countryside. To the west the Borough extends over well-wooded countryside to include Goffs Oak and the popular Lee Valley Park marks the eastern boundary.

Location

With 93,700 residents from a fairly wide range of ethnic groups and cultures, Broxbourne’s

population is becoming increasingly more diverse.  Broxbourne is one of the smaller Boroughs in Hertfordshire in terms of population.  It is located on the northern fringe of London with access to all parts of the country; it is an attractive and convenient place to live for people from all cultures.

 

Age profile

Broxbourne’s age profile is largely consistent with the rest of the county with 20,500 (or nearly 22%) of its residents over the age of 60 (19.6% 2001) and 23,500 (or 25%) under the age of 19 (also 25% in 2001).

 

Ethnicity

Broxbourne’s population is fairly diverse comprising residents from many different ethnic backgrounds, however a recent projection indicated that 90.30% would classify themselves as white compared to 85.90 of the rest of the UK population and 8.9% from mixed race, Asian and Black compared to 13.5% of the rest of the UK population

 

Religion and belief

There are six known faith groups in the Borough.  The most common religion is Christianity (65.0%) followed by Islam (2.8%) and Hinduism and Judaism (both 1.9%) with 33.70% of the population either not stating their religion or having no religion.

 

Disability

In 2011 there were 2740 (0.9%) working-age residents who described themselves as having a long term illness and were in receipt of disability living allowance.  6.4% of the total population claimed their daily activities were "limited a lot" through illness or injury.

 

Sexual orientation

The national census does not ask for peoples’ sexual orientation.  The exact percentage of lesbian, gay, and bi-sexual (LGB) people in Broxbourne is therefore not known.  Stonewall estimates that between 6-7% of the population are LGB.  This means that there could be between 4,260 and 4,970 LGB people in Broxbourne that are over 16 years old

 

Transgender

Although there is no data available on the exact figure of transgender individuals, Gires (Gender Identity Research and Education Society) estimates that 20 per 100,000 people experience gender dysphoria, with 60% of those that experience it undergoing transition.  This equates to approximately 18 people in Broxbourne (14 transgender women and 4 transgender men).
