Socio-economic information
Audit of the local community 2009
A review of the Community Plan for Broxbourne
Audit Statement has now been completed.

The Audit includes information on the local
population, an economic profile of the area, levels of local
educational attainment, the relative levels of deprivation and
health. It is intended to provide a ‘snapshot’ of the
economic, social and demographic issues facing the local community
as at October 2009. New information included in this year's
update of the Audit includes the latest unemployment figures and up
to date health statistics.
The Audit helps the Council make policy
decisions. Understanding the socio-economic climate in the
Borough helps the Council and partners to allocate resources to
meet the social and economic needs of the community.
Since the last document was produced in 2007, there have been
improvements in male and female life expectancy and reductions in
the number of early deaths from heart disease and cancer.
With regard to education, the general pattern is one of increased
achievement year on year in the Borough. Aspects of economic
activity in the Borough are of some concern, with a rise in
unemployment and relatively low levels of business start ups
compared to neighbouring authorities. The levels of teenage
pregnancy are also high in comparison to county and regional
averages.
The Borough Council would like to extend its
thanks to all agencies whose analyses of local social and economic
conditions have been incorporated in the audit statement.

Indices of Multiple Deprivation 2007
The Index of Multiple Deprivation 2007
combines a number of indicators into a single deprivation score for
each small area in England. This allows each area to be ranked
relative to one another according to their level of
deprivation. The indicators considered are income,
employment, health and disability, education, skills and training,
barriers to housing and services, and the living environment.
The Indices of Deprivation have been produced
at Lower Super Output Area level; there are 32,482 in the country,
683 of which are in Hertfordshire, and 56 in the Borough of
Broxbourne.
The report in the related links sections on
the right of the page examines the changes which have occurred in
the Borough between the 2004 and 2007 Indices of Multiple
Deprivation.
