Information for residents

The Council is taking practical steps to support residents
during the current economic downturn:
- Providing value for money. Council tax is the lowest of
all English shire districts and the Broxbourne element of the
2011/12 council tax charge was frozen
- The Council allows those residents who pay council tax by
Direct Debit to spread their payments
over 12 months as well as 10.
- The Council will lend residents the funds necessary to secure a
private rented property, and will recover the loan at an affordable
rate. The Council has adopted the Mortgage Rescue Scheme, under which struggling
homeowners are able to transfer some or all of the equity in their
home to a RSL, becoming a ‘shared owner’ or, in some cases, a full
tenant of the RSL. This scheme is offered in partnership with
the Citizens’ Advice Bureau
(CAB).
- The Council assists residents to claim housing and other
Government benefits through its ‘take-up’ campaigns.
- The Council provides around £40,000 a year to the
Next Step Centre in Waltham
Cross, which provides lifelong learning facilities and also
organises an annual jobs fair which includes sessions on completing
a CV and advice on starting a business.
- The Council provides financial support to the CAB where
residents can access financial and housing advice as well as advice
and assistance on a range of other issues.
- The Council supports the HertSavers Credit Union which
makes available good value loan facilities to residents.
