Computer Taster Sessions
Computer taster sessions in your local Hertfordshire
library are free and informal, one to one introductions to basic
computing. Aimed at adults with little or no experience of
using a computer and anyone who needs basic IT skills to support
further study, they are conducted at your own pace. We give
you a free course booklet to take away for practice. For more
details and to make a booking please ask in your local library.

Getting started with computers
Learn about the main parts of a computer and how to use a mouse
and keyboard; look at the common features of Windows and have a
basic introduction to Microsoft Office; find out how to book a
library computer; and log in and out.
Using the internet
Learn how to use Internet Explorer, search engines and
directories, visiting popular websites such as Herts Direct and the BBC.
Introduction to email
Set up a web-based email account and learn how to log in, open
and send emails and attachments; set up and use a contact
list/address book and use folders to organize emails.
Introduction to word processing
Learn how to add, edit and format text, then check spelling and
grammar before saving and printing your document.
Job searching on the internet
Learn how to search for jobs using direct.gov, Herts Direct, and NHS
Careers websites, as well as local papers online; search for jobs
on jobcentreplus and use the Jobkit effectively; apply for jobs
online and explore other websites providing careers advice and
information.
Family history and the internet
Discover how to use the internet to trace your family tree and
find your way around useful online resources.
