Local library services

Did you know that your local library offers a wide range
of services?
The Borough of Broxbourne has public libraries
in Cheshunt, Goffs Oak, Hoddesdon and Waltham Cross, and there is
also a mobile library based at Cheshunt. The libraries offer
a wide range of services for the whole community such as:
- Books, large print books, audio books,
magazines, DVDs, music recordings, music scores, playsets and maps
to borrow
- Newspapers and magazines to read
- Photocopiers and fax machines
- Information provision (including tracing
family and local history)
- Free computer and Internet facilities
(including Wi-Fi at Cheshunt and Hoddesdon)
- Computer Taster Sessions for complete
beginners or those wishing to brush up their skills on Internet
Explorer, Microsoft Word, emails and family history
Online services allow customers to:
- Join Hertfordshire Libraries, search the
catalogue, make reservations, computer bookings and use of online
reference library subscriptions
- Download free e-books and audio books from
the new e-library
Other services and concessions provided by
the libraries for people over 65, carers, or for people with a
disability include: the Home Library Service (if you are unable to
visit your local library), cassettes for blind people, reduced
library charges, increased item allowance, extended loan periods
and free reservations for carers. A wider range of titles in
large print, Braille and Moon is available via the Inter-Library
Loans service.
Cheshunt and Hoddesdon Libraries each have
an electronic magnifier which increases the image size of your
book, leaflet, etc, enabling the text to be read more easily and
pictures to be seen clearly. Contrast and the background
colour of text can be adjusted to suit the individual who is
viewing. The machines are very simple to use and staff are
always happy to help.
Cheshunt and Hoddesdon Libraries also each
have a PC with assistive technology.
'Supernova' software enables all or part of the on-screen
image to be magnified up to 32 times, and there are various colour,
contrast, brightness and cursor indication options. Speech
software is also able to read or spell out any on-screen
text. These PCs have large screens, wheelchair accessible
benching, large print keyboards and assistive mice.
Cheshunt and Goffs Oak Libraries have
disabled parking and Hoddesdon Library has an accessible
toilet. All of Broxbourne’s libraries have wheelchair access
and hearing induction loops at enquiry desks.
A reading group is held at Hoddesdon
Library on the first Tuesday of the month from 5.45pm to
6.45pm. If you would like to attend, please contact Jacky
Green.
