Volunteering

Volunteering offers many benefits.
You may gain new skills and experiences which can boost
applications for jobs; feel better about yourself; and meet new,
like-minded friends.
Volunteering for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic
Games
Up to 70,000 volunteers will be needed for the
London 2012 Games. A variety of roles will be required
including medical/first aid, press operations, transportation,
language services and stewarding. Training will be provided
to ensure that the volunteer’s skills are of the highest
standard. You can register an interest in volunteering for
the Olympics and Paralympics online.
However, London 2012 are keen that potential volunteers get
involved in local volunteering activity now to show their
commitment to local communities.
Local volunteering
Walk leaders
Broxbourne Council is coordinating a series
of health walks across
the Borough and is looking for more volunteers to train as walk
leaders. In addition to attending a free, accredited, one day
training course, you will benefit from making new friends,
improving your own health as well as that of others, and you’ll be
promoting an interest in the natural environment. You can volunteer
a few hours a week, or just an hour or so a month. For details,
email leisure@broxbourne.gov.uk or
telephone 01992 785508.
Conservation and land work
A practical working group meets every
Wednesday between 10am and 3pm somewhere within the Borough to
undertake various conservation tasks alongside the park managers.
All equipment is supplied and no experience is necessary. If you
are physically fit, sociable and enjoy working outdoors, contact
01992 785555 ext 5619 or email leisure@broxbourne.gov.uk.
Friends of the Parks and Cemeteries
Be a 'Friend' to your local park! Some of the Borough’s
open spaces – Cheshunt Park, Cedars Park, Cheshunt Cemetery and
Wormley Top Field already have active Friends’ groups’ who act as
the 'eyes and ears' of the park and support park-based community
events as well as assisting with conservation and land management.
The Friends groups have helped the Borough gain five Green Flags or
Pennants this year, the national standard for parks in the UK. New
members are very welcome, and if you would like to set up a
Friends' group in your local open space, contact the park managers
01992 785555 extension 5619 or email leisure@broxbourne.gov.uk
Working with Young People
The XS Youth Project also requires volunteers
to work alongside young people in Wormley and Turnford on
sports-based diversionary projects. For further information,
contact the project manager on 01992 785555, extension 5908.
