Make sure you have a vote
Annual register of electors
The Register of Electors is
published annually on 1 December. The electoral register is
the list of everyone who is entitled to vote. Every property within
the Borough is sent a form to register each autumn.
By law, the 'full' version of the
register is only available for inspection by the general public
under supervised access which is available at the Borough
Offices. It is also provided to political parties, credit
referencing agencies and the police. The 'edited'
register is available for public inspection at the Council's one
stop shops, local libraries and post offices. It is also available
to buy.
People are strongly encouraged to
register, not only to give themselves the opportunity to vote but,
because many credit companies and building societies use the
Electoral Register to confirm residence when considering
applications for finance. If a person's name does not appear on the
Register they may find it more difficult to obtain a loan, bank
account or even a mobile phone.
Registration is easy, if your name is not on the register you
should contact the Council for a rolling registration form.
Registration will take between six and
eight weeks.
Unable to vote in person?
Any person on the electoral
register can apply for a postal vote at any election. This is where
your ballot paper will be sent to your address about a week before
the election and all you need to do is mark the ballot paper and
send it back in the envelope provided. The closing date for postal
applications is 11 working days before the election.
Voting by proxy is where
you appoint someone to vote on your behalf. They will go to
your polling station and complete your ballot paper for
you.
You may wish to appoint a proxy to vote on
your behalf for any of the following reasons:
·
physical incapacity or blindness;
·
occupation, service, employment or attendance on a course;
·
registration as a service voter;
·
journey to the polling station by sea or air
If you do then please
complete and return a Proxy Application Form to the electoral
registration officer.
Applications for a proxy
vote for a particular election must specify the circumstances by
which the applicant cannot reasonably be expected to vote in
person. It is for an electoral registration officer to
determine whether or not the reason given is acceptable.
Rolling registration forms,
postal vote forms and proxy vote forms may be downloaded from the
box on the right of this page or collected from the
Borough Offices or from the Council's one stop shops.
Please return completed forms to:
