Petitions

Residents may submit petitions to the Council.

The Council will respond to each petition received.  Petitions are referred to the appropriate head of service who will acknowledge receipt to the lead petitioner and forward details to the Cabinet.  In submitting a petition, the name and address of each petitioner should be provided.  The lead petitioner will be informed of the outcome after the petition has been considered by the Council.

The Council’s constitution also provides for members of the public to present petitions in person and address ordinary meetings of the Council.  Meetings follow a 10 week cycle.  Further information about the procedure for presenting petitions in person is set out in Appendix A to Part 4a of the Council's Constitution.

As required by the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act 2009, the Council has set up an online petition facility under which anyone who lives, works or studies in the Borough including under 18s, may place a petition on the Council's website and supporters may sign 'up' to the petition online.  If you wish to set up an electronic petition, please complete the petition form and submit it for approval.  The Council will respond within five working days either accepting the petition or advising why it cannot be hosted.  You should indicate how long you want the petition to run which, for practical reasons, should be limited to a maximum of twelve months.  You can, if you wish, organise a traditional paper petition to run alongside an electronic petition but it is your responsibility to warn supporters they cannot record their support on both.

Any person who wishes to support an on-line petition should go to the related links on this page to register their support.  To protect the integrity of the petition only one 'indication of support' is allowed from any one email account.  This is to prevent multiple 'indications of support' from one source compromising the validity of the petition process.  At the end of the petition period, full details of the support received and action to be taken will be published on the Council's website.
