Abandoned vehicles
'Free take back' of old vehicles by the manufacturer

Car owners across the country are entitled to return their old
vehicles to the manufacturers who will dispose of them free of
charge.
The UK currently scraps around two million
cars and vans each year and the ‘End of Life Vehicles Directive’
means that manufacturers will be responsible for the disposal of
vehicles that owners take to the identified facilities. It is
hoped that the new legislation will reduce the number of cars
abandoned illegally on the highway.
All major vehicle manufacturers in the UK have
made their network arrangements with one of two service
providers:

vehicles to the manufacturer’s disposal facilities, the Council
will still dispose of unwanted vehicles at a cost from
£34.30. Residents who want to report an abandoned vehicle or
request that their own vehicle be removed and destroyed can
telephone the Council’s Helpline on 01992 785577.
Alternatively residents can email environment@broxbourne.gov.uk.
The Council advises anyone found to be
abandoning their vehicles that they can be fined up to £2,500.
Abandoned vehicles in the Borough
From July to September 2009, a total
of 133 vehicles reported abandoned were
inspected. Of those, one vehicle was
destroyed. During 2008/09, a total of 559 vehicles
were inspected, 99 per cent of them within 24 hours
and 26 vehicles were destroyed. The average time taken to
remove abandoned vehicles from the highway for
destruction is five days from the date
reported. This is due to better quality vehicles being
reported and more detailed checks being made, making sure the
vehicle is actually abandoned.
A vehicle is classified as abandoned if the Council considers
that the vehicle's owner is unlikely to return to it. If you think
you have seen an abandoned vehicle, make a report on the abandoned vehicle.
Alternatively you can call the Helpline on 01992 785577 or email
helpline@broxbourne.gov.uk Vehicles
reported as abandoned are inspected within 24 hours of receiving
the report.
