Green Waste Plus Scheme - food waste and cardboard collections start August 2010

Wheeled Bin Willie

The Green Waste Plus scheme allows residents to recycle a variety of food

waste and cardboard in their green wheeled bin along with their green waste. All cooked and uncooked food is accepted as well as most types of cardboard, with the exception of tetra packs (fruit juice cartons) and waxed cardboard. It is recommended that food waste is wrapped in newspaper to prevent unnecessary spillages and odours.

Following a successful pilot of the Green Waste Plus scheme in areas with a Thursday collection day, the Council is rolling out the scheme boroughwide to all properties currently on the Green Waste scheme.

From August, food waste and cardboard will be collected from all existing green wheeled bins along with green waste. Residents can start placing food waste and cardboard in their wheeled bin after their last normal green waste collection in July. The first boroughwide Green Waste Plus collections will take place during the weeks commencing 2 or 9 August 2010 depending on residents’ collection week. Information will be sent to residents on the scheme throughout June and July. Details of your next collection day can be found here.

What should I do to recycle my food waste and cardboard?

  • Keep an empty cereal box (or similar), or a sheet of newspaper handy in your kitchen.
  • When preparing your meal place all food waste, including any cooked food left over after the meal into the cereal box or on to a sheet of newspaper .
  • Place your cereal box or wrapped up newspaper full of food directly into your green wheeled bin.
  • The Council is also issuing kitchen caddies. All your food waste can be stored in your caddy before being emptied into your green wheeled bin. The caddy can be lined with newspaper or paper bags but please do not use plastic (including bio-degradable and compostable) bags.
  • Caddies will be delivered to all residents on the scheme throughout July (one per household). Deliveries are expected to take four weeks to complete so if you have not received your caddy by Monday 2 August 2010 please contact the helpline on 01992 785577 or collect one from your local Council one stop shop.

  • Place all other cardboard (toilet rolls, egg boxes etc.) into your wheeled bin. Tear up large pieces to create more space.
