Grass maintenance
The Council manages a number of grass verges across the Borough
between February and November inclusive, weather permitting. These
verges are managed using ride on cylinder and rotary mowers which
are designed to distribute clippings evenly across the verge. Where
obstacles restrict the use of this type of machinery, strimmers are
used. During inclement weather grass cutting may be temporarily
suspended, however as soon as is practical grass cutting will
commence with the focus being on bringing areas back into
specification as soon as practically possible.

was cut where they live.

The following photographs show the grading system used by the
Council to assess and monitor grass cutting operations with regards
to height of cut and quality of finish, grade A (acceptable) to
grade D (works required).

All reports received by the Council are inspected, however if
works are programmed in for completion within the required
timescale no action will be taken thus allowing the Council's
in-house service provider to keep to their works programme.
Height of grass
Grade A is the standard expected when a grass verge has just
been cut, although during periods of inclemental weather this may
not be the case. Grades B and C show the different stages of a
grass verge as it grows over a period of time. Grass
verges that reach grade C are normally within a few
days from a scheduled visit, depending on weather conditions. When
a grass verge reaches grade D, it is out of specification. Any
reports the Council receives which are grade D will be inspected in
the next 24 hour period.

Quality of finish
The first photo shows the standard expected when a grass verge
has just been cut. If a grass verge is similar to the
second photo, it will be revisited unless it interferes
with the scheduled work programme. Any reports the Council receives
which are similar to the third and fourth photos will be
inspected in the next 24 hour period.
