Hedge maintenance
Hedges receive a thorough reshaping prune as part of their
winter maintenance, completed between November and February. The
summer prune focuses on cutting back vegetation restricting
footpaths and sightlines and is completed between July and October
with hand held hedge cutting equipment. Generally this enables the
Council to avoid unnecessarily disturbing nesting birds.

The following photographs show the grading system used by the
Council to assess and monitor hedge cutting operations, grade
A (acceptable) to grade D (works required).

All reports received by the Council are inspected, however if
works are programmed in for completion within the required
timescale no action will be taken thus allowing the Council's
in-house service provider to keep to their works programme.
Grade A is the standard expected when a hedge has been cut
during the winter prune. Grades B and C show the different stages
of a hedge as it grows over a period of time. When
a hedge reaches grade D, it is out of specification. Any
reports the Council receives which are grade D will be visited
within 10 days.
