What is a scheduled monument?

Most scheduled monuments are archaeological sites or standing remains associated with archaeological deposits. The monuments can be buildings, structures, above or below ground but do not usually include ecclesiastical buildings or dwellings that are occupied. Although monuments are considered to be of national importance, the council recognises that they form a historic legacy in the borough linking the past with the present.
