What did the pilot involve
Households in Goffs Oak and Rye Park were
selected to take part in the purple refuse sack pilot,
which started on 8 and 9 November 2007 for six months. In December
clear sacks were also given to residents to allow them to recycle
all types of household plastic bottles at the kerbside. The pilot
was introduced with the aim of encouraging residents to increase
their recycling and reduce their refuse put out for collection.
Each household received a free allocation of 26 purple coloured
sacks, branded with the Broxbourne logo, to be used instead of
black sacks for refuse for the duration of the pilot. During this
period households are still having a weekly collection, but
the collection crews will only collect refuse that has been put in
these purple sacks. There is an option to purchase more purple
sacks if necessary. However, we encourage residents to recycle and
reduce as much of their household waste as possible by using the 13
clear sacks alongside their fortnightly kerbside green box
collection, the neighbourhood recycling
centres (NRCs) and by composting. All these methods help to
minimise how much refuse is put out for collection.
