Flats recycling
At present some flats find it difficult to
recycle their waste and it is a priority of the Council in 2011/12
to make it easier for these properties to recycle, particularly
where residents are enthusiastic about recycling more.

After the successful provision of communal
recycling boxes in areas such as Silverbirch Court, Friends Avenue
and Gwendoline Court, Bryanstone Road in Waltham Cross, the
Council introduced a pilot collection of mixed recycling and
newspapers and magazines from 10 locations in the Cheshunt area in
2009.
In the two years it has been in operation,
flats participating have recycled more than 10 tonnes per
annum which has contributed towards an overall borough-wide
recycling rate of 39.1 per cent in 2010/11. If these facilities
were provided to all flats in the Borough currently without a
recycling service it is estimated that 470 tonnes of additional
material would be recycled each year.
As a result of the pilot's success, the
service is being expanded to a further 130 blocks
of flats (approximately 1,300 flats) during July and August
2011. The facilities will provide residents with a secure area for
recycling newspapers and magazines, mixed glass and plastic bottles
and cans.

The expansion of the scheme will coincide with
a new kerbside recycling service which
will be introduced across the Borough in August. The
introduction of the new kerbside service will allow the
Council to reduce the number of collection vehicles needed,
increase the number of flats with a kerbside recycling service
and stop the need to purchase and distribute clear sacks each
year.
If residents living in flats think that their
block of flats would benefit from recycling facilities they are
encouraged to express their interest in the new service by emailing
recycling@broxbourne.gov.uk
or by calling the helpline on 01992 785577. Managing
agents are also asked to put forward suitable locations. Each
block of flats put forward will be assessed for available space and
suitability for collections and if suitable new recycling
facilities will be installed in July/August 2011.
In the meantime residents of flats without a
recycling service are directed towards their
nearest NRC where they can recycle
paper, cans, glass, plastics, cardboard and textiles.
