Flats recycling
At present some flats find it difficult to
recycle their waste and it is the Council’s intention to make it
easier for these properties to recycle in 2009/10, particularly
where residents are enthusiastic about recycling more.

After the successful provision of communal
recycling boxes in areas such as Silverbirch Court, Friends Avenue
and Gwendoline Court, Bryanstone Road in Waltham Cross, the Council
have started to roll out similar schemes to other flats. In April
2009 clearly marked kerbside boxes for cans, paper and glass were
distributed to the maisonettes in Fishers Close and Lea House,
Longcroft Drive, both in Waltham Cross, and the Council are
interested in introducing more.
The Council are also currently piloting the
collection of mixed recycling and newspapers and magazines from 10
locations in the Cheshunt area. The pilot is for a minimum of
six months and has the aims of identifying:
- If co-mingled recycling is suitable for flatted properties
- If it encourages residents living in flats to recycle more of
their waste
- Issues with collection methods including contamination
If successful, the scheme will be rolled out
to as many of the 8,000 flats in the borough as possible.
Inevitably this type of scheme will not be suitable for all flats
and these areas will be assessed on an individual basis for
recycling services, which in some cases, due to lack of space or
location, will be direction to their nearest Neighbourhood Recycling Centre (NRC).
Each block of flats has been provided with two
bins for mixed recycling (plastics, glass, cans and card) and one
for newspapers and magazines. The bins are held securely in
place using a locking system as shown in the photos below.

In the meantime residents of flatted
properties without a recycling service are directed towards
their nearest NRC where they can
recycle paper, cans, glass, plastics, cardboard and textiles.

facilities for your block of flats, please contact the
