What we do

The Council currently spends £800,000 a year keeping Broxbourne's streets clean:

  • Streets and footpaths are cleaned regularly at frequencies tailored to the requirement of each location
  • Town centres are cleaned on continuous beats between 6.30am and 6pm weekdays and 7am and 5pm Saturdays and Sundays
  • Car parks are mechanically swept
  • 600 litterbins throughout the Borough are regularly emptied (at least weekly depending on use)

Cleaning is by mechanised sweeping, sweeping by hand, litter picking or a combination of techniques. This work is monitored and the Council carries out a number of randomly selected inspections each day following a scheduled clean to ensure that an acceptable standard of cleanliness is achieved. If this standard is not achieved, the contractor is asked to return to the location to clean to the required standard.

In addition, a number of random street inspections are undertaken daily and an unsatisfactory grade results in an additional clean to bring the area up to the desired standard if the scheduled cleanse is not due within seven days of the inspection.
