Integrated environmental improvements
The Council appointed Studio Egret West in July 2010 to develop
and design an integrated package of environmental improvement
schemes in Waltham Cross town centre and along Eleanor Cross Road
and Station Road, to enhance the appeal of the area to visitors and
local residents. In November 2010, the Council’s Environmental
Services Committee supported the proposals in principle and
requested that a prioritised list of schemes was drawn up, along
with an implementation plan consisting of phases for schemes to be
undertaken in the short, medium and long term.
The proposed first phase of the Council’s integrated
package of environmental improvements will involve the:
- removal and redesign of the planters in the northern High
Street
- remodel of the vegetation on the roundabout at the junction of
Winston Churchill Way and the High Street and on the roundabout
near to Lidl
- short term improvements to Monarch's Way roundabout and subway,
which are underway.
A consultation is underway with
local businesses and residents on the proposed phase one
improvements, possible subsequent improvements and reopening the
High Street, from north of the Eleanor Cross Memorial, to traffic
and parking in the evening. Subject to funding and more detailed
consideration, further phases may include a redesign of the
southern High Street, and a redesign of Eleanor Cross Road from the
town centre through to the Borough boundary.
