Hospitals and health

A review of acute hospital and community services in Hertfordshire took place during summer 2007, ending on 1 October.

The consultation, 'Delivering quality health care for Hertfordshire' consulted upon several issues which could affect residents of the Borough.

The PCT agreed:

To bring acute hospital services for east and north Hertfordshire together at the Lister hospital in Stevenage;
To develop two local general hospitals providing outpatient, diagnostic and minor treatments in Welwyn Garden City and Hemel Hempstead. Both of these hospitals will have an urgent care centre, which will care for about 65 per cent of people who go to A&E at the moment
To develop a network of eight urgent care centres across Hertfordshire, including an agreement to pilot one each at both Hertford County and Cheshunt Community hospitals.
To establish the other six urgent care centres at the Lister, Watford General, St Albans City and Herts and Essex hospitals, as well as the two proposed for the new local general hospitals in Welwyn Garden City and Hemel Hempstead;

The PCTs also agreed to invest £2m in the ambulance service, and 0.75m in local transport services.

The consultation on services in Barnet, Enfield and Haringey "< Your Health, Your Future, Safer, Closer, Better" was launched on 28 June and ran until 19 October 2007. The PCT decided that planned surgery will be centralised at Chase Farm hospital, and that a midwife led birthing unit may be sited there. In addition they agreed that:

"The precise nature of A&E services….will be based on an extended hours local A&E Service that will be open twelve hours per day to cover maximum demand. Urgent care during night time will be provided by co-located GP out of hours services".
