Sport Makers

Active Broxbourne and Active East Herts have joined forces to recruit part of the 883 Sport Makers needed across Hertfordshire to support a range of community sports activities by 2013.

Sport Makers is a national project and part of Sport England's Mass Participation Legacy Programme.

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who would like to be part of a national workforce to make sport happen in local sports settings. Successful candidates will:

  • Have an interest in sport and a desire to get others participating
  • Have a business skill or leisure interest that could benefit community sports groups
  • Be willing to attend a three hour inspirational workshop at:

Venue: Fletchers Lea, High Street, Ware, Herts., SG12 9AL

Date & Time: Tuesday 24 January, 6 - 9pm.

For further information about Sport Makers or to sign up as a Sport Makers Volunteer/Provider please visit the Sport Makers website.

Sport Makers will use the inspirational pull of the London 2012 games to recruit, train and deploy 883 new sports volunteers aged 16 and over, to make sport happen across Hertfordshire.

What does this mean?
Sport Makers will organise and support new hours of grassroots sports creating new opportunities across the county. They will bring the values of the London 2012 Games to life and act as ambassadors for helping to create the London 2012 legacy within Hertfordshire.

Sport Makers are the people who directly make sport happen at the local level. Some Sport Makers will organise sport for themselves and their friends, colleagues and neighbours. Others won’t be taking part themselves, but will be doing all those other things that make the sporting activity possible.

Become a Provider:
Active Broxbourne are now looking to build a range of sport making opportunities across the Borough. We are looking for opportunities both formal (30+ Football, Lee Valley 10k run, Active Together, Herts Youth Games) and informal (Health Walks, playing sport with friends) to encourage more adults to participate in sport.

Providers do not have to be from a sport specific organisation, to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity.  To become a provider, register your organisation/club.

Become a Sport Maker:
This is a fantastic opportunity for all adults to try something new!

Active Broxbourne are looking for individuals who have a passion for sport and are inspired by the London 2012 games. We need you to sign up to be a Sport Maker and make a real difference in your community.

Free training will be given, to give you new skills on how to develop sport provision in community settings.

You will also receive a free Adidas sport top and bag for just coming to the workshop.

How can Sport Makers benefit my organisation/club?

Sport Makers is a project that gives volunteers the skills they need to help community organisations to build on existing provision.

Active Broxbourne’s and Active Herts’s aim is to ensure that by 2013, over 50 potential volunteers attend this inspirational workshop, with around 40 of these being deployed into a sports leadership role for a minimum of 10 hours of volunteering. Of those deployed, we hope that all will continue to volunteer in sport beyond these 10 hours. The workshops are aimed at those who are not currently choosing to volunteer in sport.

Sport Makers will be fully inclusive and target participants including people who have a disability, both males and females and participants from BME groups.

WE NEED YOU! to help us provide opportunities to utilise the skills of Sport Makers.

Although we need opportunities that are sport club based, there are many other areas where Sport Maker skills can be utilised:

  • Fundraising officers for charitable events
  • Marketing managers to promote new initiatives.
  • Local initiatives, lead walkers, Sports co-ordinators.
  • Workplace Champions - activities in lunch hours and after work

Benefits to your organisation:

  • Gain skilled individuals to help grow your projects
  • Increase the profile of you organisation through a nationally recognised scheme.
  • Increase membership and/or participants in activities.
  • Advertise your opportunity to the whole of Hertfordshire

If you feel you may have a suitable opportunity, please upload it. If you require help or advice on how to do this, please contact Broxbourne Council’s Sports Development Officer by e-mailing mbr.jwsc.leisure@broxbourne.gov.uk or call 01992 785555.
