Maximising the Legacy of the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games
What is Broxbourne Borough Council doing to maximise the
benefits of the London 2012 Games?
Broxbourne Council
is working in partnership with other authorities to produce an
economic development study. The study will look at how the
White Water Centre can help create a popular visitor destination;
and identify opportunities for attracting further leisure
attractions into the area. It will look at how visitor numbers and
spend can be maximised in the area, and how local people can
benefit from this through jobs
and training.
A streetscape
design concept report has been produced for Waltham Cross town
centre. The Council is looking at ways to improve the appearance of
the area. The street designs are based on the rocks and rapids of
white water rivers. These works are part of the Waltham
Cross Renaissance project.
A development brief has already been adopted for Hazelmere Marina,
a site on Station Road opposite the White Water Centre. A
mixed-used development is being encouraged with hotel, restaurant,
and residential properties. This will compliment the White Water
Centre strengthening the area as a leisure destination.

A development
brief has been adopted for a site called Park Plaza North.
This site is at the entrance to Broxbourne in the west. It will be
used for a distinctive and high-quality business development that
provides a sustainable and diverse source of quality employment
opportunities for the local community.
Broxbourne Council will ensure there is consultation with
local residents on all these developments. Ultimately the Council’s
aim is to ensure the London 2012 Games delivers lasting economic,
physical regeneration, and community benefits for the whole
Borough.
An Olympic Legacy Board has been established with a number of
specialist work streams. The board has high-level representation
from all partners, and directs the work of each work stream. In
this way, resources are pooled in an efficient manner, providing
additional expertise from other authorities, and in the process
value for money for Broxbourne.
An Olympic sub-committee has been established that
provides co-ordinated councillor input into Broxbourne council’s
activities around the London 2012 Games and its legacy.
An Olympic Regeneration Officer has been appointed funded
jointly with Hertfordshire County Council and Epping Forest
District Council. The purpose of the role is to
identify opportunities and delivery legacy benefits
provided by the London 2012 Games, ensure good
communicate with partner authorities, and assist the
co-ordination of key workstreams.
