The Olympics 2012

White water canoeist

The London 2012 Games are coming to Broxbourne! The Lee Valley White Water Centre is currently being constructed near Waltham Cross in the heart of Lee Valley Regional Park. The Centre will host the Canoe Slalom events during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games.

Lee Valley White Water Centre is the only brand new Olympic Venue open to the public ahead of the 2012 games. It will be a major centre for white water rafting as well as canoeing and kayaking both before and after the Games.

The centre will be owned, managed and funded by the Lee Valley Regional Park and will be a world-class venue for elite athletes as well as offering opportunities for beginners and intermediate canoeists.

To find out more about the centre visit the GO whitewater site for the latest on the adrenaline packed Lee Valley White Water Centre.

The London 2012 games will bring many opportunities for volunteers, employment and leisure. To find out more go to the official London 2012 site.

The Borough Council hopes that the Centre will be a catalyst for the regeneration of the surrounding area as part of its wide-ranging proposals for a ‘Waltham Cross renaissance.’

Cultural Olympiad

The London 2012 Games are about both sport and culture. The Olympics, via the Cultural Olympiad will celebrate culture, communities and sport throughout the UK. The Cultural Olympiad is a key opportunity to make the 2012 Games ‘everybody’s games’, extending the reach, benefits and the legacy of the Olympics and Paralympics beyond London and beyond sport.

To celebrate the Olympics, the weekend of 23-25 July 2010 has been designated as the London 2012 Open Weekend where there will be UK-wide sports, arts and cultural activities to celebrate the 2012 Games. Broxbourne Council are running three events as part of the Open Weekend:

2) 'Two Years and Counting' is a celebration of sport and culture in Waltham Cross Town Centre on Saturday 24 July from 10:30am to 3pm. Starting with the unveiling of the refurbished Eleanor Cross memorial, a programme has been developed with Herts County Council and includes music from across the globe, performances from local dance groups, interviews with past and future Olympians, displays from local sports groups, films inspired by the Olympics and performances from talented Hertfordshire musicians. There will also be opportunities to participate in sport and cultural activities

3) Cedars Park Archeological Dig – This weekend long dig at the historic Cedars Park is part of Discovering Places, a new Cultural Olympiad initiative designed to discover, explore, be inspired by and benefit from the UK's historic and contemporary buildings, public spaces and natural places in and around the cities, towns and villages where they live and work.
