Public footpaths & Rights of Way
Public rights of way, footpaths and bridleways
This page has been created to publicise the public
footpath/bridleway network in Broxbourne. It is hoped that it will
encourage residents to make use of the network and enjoy the
countryside in and around the borough.
The Rights of Way network in the Borough

In Broxbourne, the rights of way network amounts to 124
footpaths, four bridleways and 11 Roads Used as Public Paths
(RUPPs), which collectively form a total distance of 43 miles.
Access to footpaths and bridleways varies, with those in the
urban areas and the Lee Valley Regional Park being more accessible
than ones in the more rural parts of the Borough.
The map above shows the location of railway stations and
nearest car parks to the rights of way network.
The Borough's footpaths and bridleways offer the opportunity of
enjoying a wide range of landscape and habitat areas. There are
riverside and canalside walks along the Lee Valley, woodland walks
on the western fringe of the Borough; whilst between the built-up
area and the woods, several walks take you through areas of open
farmland and grassland.
The Borough Council has produced a folder entitled "Borough of
Broxbourne: Walking for Pleasure", identifying selected
circular walks in the Borough. These pass through the variety of
landscapes and habitats to be experienced in the Borough. Copies of
this folder and borough walks can be obtained from all One Stop
Shops and Council Offices. Typical walks which may be
currently available are shown on the map and number one to
four.
Maintenance of the Rights of Way Network
Under the Rights of Way Act 1990, the County Council has overall
responsibility for the rights of way network across the County.
However, within Broxbourne, the Borough Council acts as agent to
the County Council and is currently securing improvements
to the rights of way network. Improvements undertaken
recently include boardwalks over areas of deep mud and new or
improved bridges to cross watercourses.
