Work to provide new A10 footbridge to begin

A10 footbridge contract signing

Work to provide a new walking and cycling bridge over the A10 in Broxbourne is planned to start in February after the Borough Council signed the construction contract with Britcon (Scunthorpe) Ltd at the ‘Connect 2: Towards Better Design’ workshop held at the Council Offices on 19 January.   This follows the joint acquisition of the necessary land with Hertfordshire County Council in October 2009 and the completion of a section 278 agreement which allows work to commence on the highway.

Councillor Ken Ayling, Leader of the Borough Council said: ‘I am delighted the contact has been signed with Britcon to proceed with the bridge.’

Sustrans’ Connect2 project won the TV vote in December 2007 to bring £50million from the Big Lottery Fund to 79 communities across the UK and create networks for everyday journeys for people travelling by foot or bike.

Planning permission for the A10 footbridge project, which will provide a safe east to west pedestrian link to the new St Mary’s School and the public right of way network, was granted in February 2008.  The scheme is likely to cost in the region of £1.5m, funded by the £500k grant from sustainable transport charity Sustrans’ Connect2 successful Big Lottery bid and £1m allocated in the Council’s capital programme.
