Burma Star Day
Broxbourne residents
who are holders of the Burma Star met on Friday 15 August to
commemorate the end of the Burma campaign in World War II.
Organised by the Council and the Burma Star
Association, the veterans gathered for a ceremony at 11.45am at a
plaque that honours those from Broxbourne who served in the Far
East campaigns during the Second World War. The plaque was
unveiled in September 2000 by the then Mayor of Broxbourne, Cllr
Mrs Lyn White and is situated at the Beaumont Centre in Turners
Hill, Cheshunt.
The Burma Star holders served in all branches
of the services, including the Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air
Force. This year, they were joined by Reverend Marion
Harding, the Leader of Broxbourne Council, Councillor Ken Ayling,
Deputy Mayor of Broxbourne, Councillor Mrs Lyn White, Councillor
Charles Tranham and Councillor Mrs Judith Clemerson.
Following the gathering at the plaque, the
veterans met guests at a reception in the Prescott Lounge at Wolsey
Hall in Windmill Lane, Cheshunt.
