Broxbourne Council agrees standstill council tax for 2010-11

Broxbourne Council, in Hertfordshire, currently has the lowest council tax of all shire districts, including parishes, in England and last night at a full council meeting decided to freeze council tax at that level for 2010/11.

This means that the average Band D household will continue to pay £113.24 a year despite the economic conditions and an increase of only 1.1 per cent in funding received by the Council from central Government.  The total bill including the County Council and police elements will increase by £5.00 a year (0.4 per cent).

Councillor David Lewis, Chairman of the Finance & Personnel Committee said in his speech to the Council:

‘Residents can expect continued value for money and continuing good quality services in Broxbourne over the coming year.  Setting a balanced budget for next year with no increase in council tax, few increases in fees and charges, and without compromising the quality of our services or raiding our balances is an achievement of which we can all be proud.’

Broxbourne’s own budget is only a small fraction of the total bill paid by residents. The Authority will retain only 8.2 per cent of the council tax paid by residents with 81.1 per cent going to the County Council and even the police taking a 10.7 per cent share.

Broxbourne is one of two councils in Hertfordshire which allows residents who pay by Direct Debit to spread their council tax payments over 12 months rather than 10, reducing the instalment due each month.  Residents may set up a Direct Debit by phoning the helpline on 01992 785577.

A variety of other payment methods are available including paying in person at the one stop shops, or any paypoint outlet using their payment cards.  Payments can also be made via the council’s website, by using the automated telephone line on 0845 601 7620 or by post.
