Pupils have a chance to be Councillors for a morning
Year 6 pupils from
Holy Trinity C of E Primary School in Waltham Cross had a taste of
what its like to be a councillor last Friday when they visited the
Mayor at the Council offices.
The Youngsters spent the morning at the offices learning about
recycling and then were introduced by the Mayor to the rigours of
debating, asking questions in front of an audience of teachers and
fellow pupils. They quickly mastered the correct procedures
and spoke with clear voices using the Council Chamber’s microphone
system. The Mayor remarked how pleased he was to introduce
young people to local democracy and the role of councillors and
hoped it could be seen as a recruitment drive for the future!
After refreshments and a photo session the Mayor showed his
visitors around his official office, the Mayors Parlour, and
pointed out some of the memorabilia presented by a host of official
visitors to the Council Offices over the years.
The visit was made under the Council’s community awareness
programme and is seen as an opportunity to break down barriers and
explain to the wider community how the Council works.
