Disposal of commercial waste
This summer, Broxbourne Council is reminding
businesses how to dispose of their waste
correctly.
Any waste generated from business activities,
including all general waste and items that can be recycled, is
regarded as commercial waste. Under the Environmental
Protection Act 1990 and Duty of Care regulations, businesses have a
legal responsibility to ensure their commercial waste is contained
securely and disposed of correctly. In addition, the cost of
commercial waste disposal is not included in the business rates so
each business must make arrangements to dispose of any waste
generated.
Broxbourne Services, the Council’s in-house
contractor, provides a reliable and competitive commercial
waste collection service to local businesses, and currently has
over 400 customers. As part of a local
authority, Broxbourne Services is authorised to carry out this
service, and offers businesses commercial waste agreements to
ensure commercial waste is disposed of in the appropriate
manner.
Businesses can choose to be supplied with
either 1,100 litre eurobin waste containers or commercial waste
sacks, which will be collected on days and frequencies which suit
customers' needs and preferences. All waste is taken to a
licensed disposal site.
Broxbourne
Services also offers commercial recycling collections (paper,
cans, cardboard) and a collection service for commercial clinical
waste.
Businesses wishing to set up a trade waste
agreement should contact Broxbourne Services’ waste management team
on 01992 642240. Further information on businesses’
responsibilities relating to commercial waste, including a list of
Broxbourne Services’ charges is also available at One Stop Shops or
in the environment and planning
section.
