Draft Hoddesdon town centre strategy published for consultation

The Council has published for consultation a
draft town centre strategy for Hoddesdon which seeks to build on
the strengths of the town and set out a vision for the
future.
The strategy aims to make sure that the town
centre remains a popular destination for shoppers, visitors,
traders and other businesses and sets out a number of short, medium
and long term actions to achieve this vision. It contains a
wide range of proposed measures and policy changes related to
access, parking, shopping, public realm improvements, housing,
leisure, safety and promotional activity.
The Council sees an urgent need to bring more
people into Hoddesdon High Street and proposes to do begin to do
this is by promoting the opening up the High Street to cars and
taxis. This will require the approval of the County
Council. The Council wants to use this as a centre-piece of a
wider strategy to improve Hoddesdon town centre and is asking
residents for their ideas on what else the Strategy should contain
as well as their views on opening up the High Street.
Councillor Ken Ayling, Leader of the Council
said:
‘The Council is pleased to provide this
opportunity for comment on the future of the town centre. I
welcome the publication of this draft strategy. It is the
first step.
This is a starting point - not an end.
It will get ideas into the public arena. I hope it will
provoke thought. I would like to get the views of more
traders and business people as to what is necessary from their
perspective.
I also hope the first phase of the traffic
proposals can be resolved and implemented quickly. I am
pushing to achieve this for the 1st December.’
The draft strategy is available from the
Council’s one stop shops, Council leisure facilities and Hoddesdon
library. A four page A4 summary leaflet is also
available from all these locations. For more information, or
to comment on the proposals contained in the strategy, residents
can contact the Council on 01992 785555 or email hoddesdonstrategy@broxbourne.gov.uk.
The consultation period ends on 9 October 2009.
