Approval of Hoddesdon Town Centre Strategy

The Town Centre Sub-Committee and Planning and
Licensing Committees which both met on 14 January, approved the
Council’s Hoddesdon Town Centre Strategy.
The approved Strategy sets out a number of
actions to be undertaken by the Council with the support of the
County Council, local businesses and property owners to further
improve the town centre.
The short term actions in the Strategy have
been amended to take account of progress made, including the
opening up of Hoddesdon High Street in December, in order to
encourage local residents to take advantage of the 23 new parking
spaces and shop locally.
Verge improvements, double kerbing and tree
planting have been carried out along the Conduit Lane
corridor. The existing taxi rank opposite the Clock Tower has
been extended and the Council is exploring areas where additional
taxi parking facilities can be provided. Junction
improvements are also being looked at to improve vehicular access
from the southern end of the town centre to allow for the
possibility of vehicles turning right at Charlton Way.
The revised Strategy will put more emphasis on
increasing levels of tourism, especially as the 2012 Olympics
approach. It also brings forward a redevelopment vision for
the Tower Centre as a medium term action and sets out objectives
for its future. The Strategy covers the introduction of a
countywide ‘shop local campaign’ and the programme of new town
centre events currently being developed.
The Strategy will be regularly monitored and
an implementation plan will now be prepared to outline costs,
milestones, target dates and responsibilities for each
action. This will be presented to a future meeting of the
Town Centre Sub-Committee.
