Investment in recycling centres
In 2007/08 the weight of recyclable material
collected at the 26 boroughwide neighbourhood recycling centres
(NRCs) increased by approximately 22 per cent compared with the
previous year.
The weight of cardboard collected at the
NRCs has increased by 37 per cent.
In 2007/08 the Council invested £60,000 in the
Borough’s NRCs. New style glass banks, which are safer to use
and more pleasing to the eye, were installed at a number of sites.
Larger cardboard banks were also provided at some
sites. The following were refurbished:
- Waltham Cross South Car Park
- Chaucer Way in Hoddesdon
- The V&E Club on Goffs Lane
- Sainsbury’s car park Hoddesdon.
New fencing was installed at Chaucer Way and
Waltham Cross south car park to enclose the sites, improve their
appearance and to reduce the impact of windswept litter. The number
of banks was increased at some sites to boost the capacity and to
allow additional materials to be recycled, for example plastic
bottles can now be taken to Chaucer Way. Proposals are also in
place to relocate the NRC at Cadmore Lane.
The NRC at Hoddesdon open air pool was
extended. This site now has a new tarmac hard standing where all
the recycling banks have been consolidated. Extra cardboard banks
will be installed on this site at the beginning of June. Works to
improve the site at Hammondstreet Road, which will be of a similar
design to Hoddesdon Pool are currently underway.
A further £100,000 investment is earmarked in
2008/09 for recycling initiatives including refurbishments to
NRCs.
There are 26 NRCs located across the Borough
with facilities to recycle paper, cans, glass, cardboard, plastic
and textiles. Further details can be found on the Council’s
website in the recycling section.
