Keep kids green this holiday

mother and child recyclingBroxbourne Council is encouraging parents and children to do more recycling this summer. There are a number of activities that parents and children can participate in to help them learn more about reducing and recycling waste.

Ideas for activities to keep children occupied include:

  • Take children food shopping and ask them to point out packaging that could be recycled (cardboard, plastic bottles), and encourage them to help choose products with as little packaging as possible (or with no packaging at all like loose fruit and vegetables).
  • Ask children to draw up a tick chart with recyclable material in one column, and ask them to tick the appropriate row every time they put something in the green kerbside box, the clear sacks (if on the scheme) or visit the neighbourhood recycling centres. It could be a competition between siblings!
  • When wrapping presents, ask children to use old wrapping paper, newspaper and pictures from old magazines.
  • Encourage children to grow plants in yogurt pots, and paper egg cartons.
  • Ask children to use empty plastic drinks bottles cut in half to make bird feeders.
