National food safety week

This week is National Food Safety Week, an annual promotional event to highlight the importance of food safety and the principles of good hygiene.

This year the theme is called ‘Germ watch’ and is designed to raise awareness, especially among vulnerable groups, of the 4 Cs:

  1. Cross Contamination
  2. Cleaning
  3. Chilling
  4. Cooking

Broxbourne Borough Council has been visiting a number of children centres to talk to local childminders about food safety.  Babies and children have a lower level of immunity to germs, so parents and carers have to take extra care over food safety and hygiene.  The Council advised on the hidden dangers in the kitchen and at the table that can lead to illness.

Freya Rymer of the National Child Minding Association said “This has been a fantastic opportunity to work in partnership with Broxbourne Borough Council helping to provide information to Childminders on how to correctly store and prepare food.”

Visits were made to Greenfield Children's Centre and Rye Park Childminding Group, where regular meetings are held for childminders.  They also visited Longfield Children Centre; a new venue for childminders, and the Foyer, a younger mothers supported living unit.
