Council supports National Tinnitus Week 8 to 14 February 2010
As part of national Tinnitus Week, Council officers are visiting
entertainment venues across the Borough to encourage best practice,
especially in protecting staff from hearing damage.
The effects of tinnitus are a buzzing or ringing in the ears,
which can have a profound impact on people's lives. It is
estimated that 4.7million people in the UK experience tinnitus in
one or both ears.
In a recent survey, workplace noise was blamed for the onset of
tinnitus by more than 20 per cent of respondents.
Since April 2008 the leisure sector including clubs and public
houses have been under an obligation to ensure that employees and
freelancers are protected from excessive noise levels particularly
from amplified music. The Council will be checking noise
levels and offering advice about exposure to excessive noise.
It has offered advice to landlords and clubs on how to control,
reduce and monitor exposure to noise. Many of the controls are
simple and cost-effective and the audience can still enjoy the
performance.
During Tinnitus week, visits will be made to selected
entertainment venues to ensure that they are following noise
exposure guidelines. Further information visit the sound advice website or
telephone the Council’s noise section on 01992 785511.
