New community building

dignatories at opening ceremonyA new community room on the Holdbrook Estate, Waltham Cross was opened by the Mayor of Broxbourne, Councillor Mrs Carol Crump-Eynon on Wednesday 21 May.  Also in attendance were the Leader of the Council, Councillor Ken Ayling, other Borough Councillors, representatives of the partner organisations which have been involved, and local residents who will benefit from the new facilities.

The centre, which has been named ‘Holdbrook Community Centre’, is located in the grounds of Holdbrook primary school and has been provided as part of a regeneration project funded by the Council and central government to address local needs, including adult learning and a community meeting space.

The centre comprises two rooms, a kitchen, tables and chairs, a WC and car parking.  It will be used by local community groups and providers of adult learning, and a number of learning sessions are planned for June, run by NextStep.  Details of these sessions are listed in a flyer available from the Council’s one stop shop in Waltham Cross.  A number of activities took place on the day, including a tour of the new building, a ‘Hoola Hoop Fitness’ demonstration, face painting and balloon modelling.  There was also a display about the regeneration project.

The new kickabout area on the Holdbrook Estate was officially opened on 15 May, also by the Mayor of Broxbourne.  It is located next to the primary school on the east side and has recently benefited from landscaping works around the perimeter and the installation of new play equipment for small children.  The opening gave attendees an opportunity to watch a football coaching session for young people and children run by West Ham United FC.  The Premiership football club ran a series of football training sessions on the Estate earlier this year.

Improvement works to the shopping precinct on the Estate are also now complete and the new precinct area was officially opened on 19 May by the Mayor of Broxbourne.

A steering group will be set up for the community building.  It will be made up of users of the building and representatives from the Borough Council.  For information on hiring one of the rooms in the new community building, residents can contact the Council on 01992 785528 or e-mail aah.projects@broxbourne.gov.uk.  Access to the new community building is not via the school but via a separate entrance on the south western corner of Longcroft Drive, between Thistly House (EN8 7QH) and Holyfield House (EN8 7QQ).
