Re-deployable CCTV

CCTV install

Broxbourne Council, in conjunction with the Police, has purchased a new deployable overt CCTV system to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) in the Borough. It will be deployed to target areas which are experiencing problems with nuisance youths or enviro-crimes such as fly-tipping.

The Council will site the camera in Hoddesdon town centre at the end of August, before deploying the cameras in other areas across the Borough. The other identified locations with recurring problems of ASB are as follows:

  • Chaucer Court, Hoddesdon;
  • Cadmore Lane shops, Cheshunt;
  • Goffs Oak shops around the Co-op store;
  • Pound Close, Hoddesdon;
  • V&E Club, Goffs Lane; and
  • Hammondstreet Road open space car park.

To support this initiative additional/upgrading of the street lighting will also be taking place at a number of these locations at a cost of £10k.

The camera, which costs £8k is lightweight and can be installed on street lamp posts in various locations. It can be viewed and controlled remotely by either Council officers or the Police, using mobile phone technology.

Similar systems have been used by the London boroughs of Enfield and Waltham Forest, as well as Epping Forest District Council and all have indicated that it is an effective tool in addressing ASB and enviro-crime.

This will be a further tool to help the Council and the Police to improve public perceptions of safety in the Borough and also tackle any perpetrators of anti-social behaviour.  The Council already has town centre CCTV systems in both Waltham Cross town centre and the Cheshunt Old Pond area, as well as a small scale system at Andrews Lane in Cheshunt and a range of covert CCTV cameras to help gather intelligence/evidence of perpetrators.  The Police have also introduced a range of ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras in the Borough to help combat travelling criminality.
