Council tackles spate of sewer blockages
Broxbourne Council had a very busy December
2009 dealing with blocked sewers. While Thames Water is responsible
for all public sewer blockages, Broxbourne Council deals with
reports of private sewer blockages.
During December 2009, the Council served a
total of 126 clearance notices for blocked sewers on householders
compared with 39 in December of the previous year. Contractors
clearing the blockages reported that the principal cause of the
obstructions were householders flushing hygiene and surface
cleaning wipes into the sewerage system. Fat and grease were also
contributory factors in many instances.
In order to significantly reduce the risk of
drain blockages, residents are advised to dispose of their wipes as
domestic waste via their purple sacks. Fat and grease should be
disposed as food waste rather than being washed down the
sink. The Council has the power to serve notices on
householders who share use of a sewer asking them to clear
blockages.
For further information, residents can
telephone the Council’s environmental health service on 01992
785511.
