Hoddesdon is a busy market town in the north of the Borough of Broxbourne and about 20 miles from London.
Named in the Domesday book of 1086, it grew from a coaching stop on the main route between London and Cambridge. With a long and varied history, there are a number of buildings of historical interest including some of the town's original coaching inns. Markets are held on Wednesdays and Fridays and in addition to these there are regular town centre events with the biggest being the Hoddesdon Loves Christmas event in November. Love Hoddesdon has produced an excellent guide giving details of all the events in the Hoddesdon area.
The outskirts of the town boast a busy industrial area, including the new Ambition Broxbourne Business Centre, parkland, the Borough's museum along with a number of visitor attractions including its theatre, the Spotlight.
A strategy for Hoddesdon town centre was published in 2010 to promote improvements.
- Since 2013, work has been undertaken to improve the quality and attractiveness of the town. This work involved footpath repaving, road resurfacing around the clock tower and improved street furniture such as new seating.
- The most recent addition has been the installation of a 'Welcome To Hoddesdon' sign at the entrance to the allyway leading to the High Street off Brewery Road to encourage visitors to the town.
For the future
- Harmonisation of the parking in the town centre.
- Further gateway features and improved signage to the town are under discussion.
