Work to transform the vehicle turning area south of the Eleanor Cross monument in Waltham Cross is progressing well.  The scheme, which started in January 2019 forms part of a major regeneration programme for the town centre and will create a new high quality, family friendly town square including seating and new landscaped green spaces. It will raise the profile of Waltham Cross as an attractive place to live and run a business. The square which will tell the story of Queen Eleanor's funeral procession in 1290 from Lincoln to her final resting place in Westminster Abbey, will also be used to host community events and specialist markets. A cycle event which visits all the monuments is due to visit Waltham Cross on 26th August.

Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has provided £678,000 towards the £1.36million total cost.  Adam Wood, Head of Infrastructure at the LEP has said "We see this project as vital to the overall renaissance of this historic market town by breathing new life and vitality to the centre.  The regeneration of our large and small towns is a key priority for the LEP and we are delighted this exciting work is now underway".

The first stage of the scheme was to divert underground utility equipment.  This work is now complete and the main paving works have started with the northern section  now open to the public. New trees are due to be planted in June. An inaugration ceremony was held on19 February to mark the start to the regeneration of the town centre.  The name of the square as chosen by local community groups will be revealed at the opening ceremony.

The project is programmed to be complete by the end of July. Watch the video below to see the work in progress.
