The planning system aims to maintain and improve the environment and appearance of the Borough by balancing the protection of the environment and amenities of the area against the social and economic benefits that new development may bring. It controls development through decisions on planning applications which take account of the policy framework and Government guidance and the individual merits of each scheme. Public input into both the format of the plan and the determination of each planning application is central to the process.

Changes to permitted development rights for household extensions and changes of use
As of 30 May 2013 The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (Amendment) (England) Order 2015 comes into force. This amendment introduces a number of temporary relaxations and/or new procedures for householder extensions, schools, changes of use, extensions to commercial premises, and the removal of prior approval for telecommunications apparatus in conservation areas. For householder six and eight metre extensions you can apply by downloading the Householder Prior Approval Form.
