Improved local footpath network
The map above shows the extent of the network of local walking
and cycling routes, all converging on the site where the A10
footbridge has been built.
As part of the Waltham Cross renaissance
programme, the network of footpaths in the Waltham Cross area
are being strengthened. An important element of this is the
recent construction of the A10 footbridge situated
north of Theobalds Lane. A pedestrian footbridge across the A10
provides a safe means of access across the derestricted dual
carriageway carrying in excess of 800 vehicles per hour, including
a larger number of heavy goods vehicles. The primary goal was
to provide a safe route to the new St Mary's School site. The
bridge has also opened up the east and west links to the
countryside, especially the links to the public right of way
network and the Lee Valley Regional Park. In addition, the
bridge has provided a link to local railway stations, public
transport routes, designated cycle routes and the town centres.
A footpath/cycleway link between Bury Green Road and the new
A10 footbridge has also been completed as part of the project to
improve access to the new St Mary's School site. Hertfordshire
County Council has also completed a cycleway network to the
east.
