There are over 800 food businesses in the Borough, all of which are subject to a programme of inspections. The results of inspections are reported to the Food Standards Agency which publishes the results in the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.
Information for Businesses
Following an inspection from the Environmental Health Officer there is a 14 day window for the Council to advise the business of their food hygiene rating. Once notified of their rating the business can take the following actions.
Request a revisit
Businesses can request a revisit any time before their next planned inspection. Businesses requesting a revisit should contact the inspecting officer, who, if satisfied that all the improvements have been completed, will revisit and re-assess hygiene standards. This will be a general inspection, not just of the specific areas for improvement. The business's food hygiene rating could go up or down as a result.

Appeal the decision
If you think that your score is wrong or unfair, you should speak to the inspecting officer in the first instance so that they can explain how the rating was calculated.
If you are still not happy with your rating, you can appeal in writing within 14 days. To appeal, you must complete the appeal form to the right of the page and send it to the Environmental Health Manager at the following address:

If you do not want to appeal your rating, but want your customers to know of any unusual circumstances that lead to your rating and/or that you have carried the improvements required, you have the ‘right to reply’. Those wishing to exercise the right of reply should download the form from the right of the page and submit it to the Environmental Health Manager.
