Small business rate relief

If your sole or main property has a rateable value which does not exceed £15,000, you will receive a percentage reduction in your bill for that property. This can be up to a maximum of 100% (for a property with a rateable value of not more than £12,000).

This percentage reduction is available if:

  • you occupy one property
  • your property is occupied
  • you have a rateable value under £15,000

The total rateable value must not exceed £19,999 outside London or £27,999 in London, on each day for which relief is being sought. If the total rateable value becomes higher, relief will end on the day of the increase.

If you occupy a property with a rateable value of under £51,000 you will not receive small business rates relief, instead your rate will be calculated using the small business multiplier.

GOV.UK provides more details on this type of relief.

Change in circumstances

When you are receiving small business relief you must notify the Council if:

  • you occupy an additional property
  • the rateable value increases for a property you occupy in another local authority's area
