Hackney Carriage and Private Licensing

New vehicle

All vehicles are subject to conditions described in the Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Handbook. If the vehicle does not meet the criteria, the application will be refused. The vehicle must be less than five years old at the time of first licence application and London taxis must be less than 10 years old. If you are unsure if the vehicle is suitable, contact the Licencing team before purchasing the vehicle.

Please contact the Licensing team in advance to discuss when you would like the vehicle licensed to avoid any licensing delays.

All vehicles are subject to conditions described in the handbook and must be less than five years old . London taxis must be less than 10 years old. To make an application you will need to provide:

  • a completed application form - £170. Print, sign and return via email – if you are not able to print the form, you can complete the form online, save as a document, and email to taxi@broxbourne.gov.uk. You will then be required to sign the form upon collection of your licence/plate
  • V5 or proof of ownership
  • current MOT (legislation requires that hackney carriage licensed vehicles have an MOT once they are 12 months old)
  • valid insurance certificate
  • certificate of compliance
  • meter calibration certificate (for Hackney Carriages only)

Forms

You must hold a current Broxbourne hackney carriage driver licence to be permitted to drive a Broxbourne licensed hackney carriage vehicle.

You must hold a current Broxbourne private hire driver licence in order to drive a Broxbourne licensed private hire vehicle.

Anyone who is not a Broxbourne licensed driver is not permitted to drive a Broxbourne licensed vehicle at any time, even if they are the licensed driver’s partner/family - unless it is being road tested by a mechanic (with the vehicle having undergone repairs).
