Help in the home

There are services available in Broxbourne to assist older and disabled people with meals, gardening, jobs around the home and keeping warm in winter.

Broxbourne Food Bank
The Broxbourne food bank combats poverty by providing emergency food for those in crisis.
Agencies that help people in crisis can refer you, or you can email or telephone 07943 986261.

Hertfordshire Community Meals
Funded by Hertfordshire County Council, the service delivers cooked meals every day to people in their own homes.  The price of the meals is reduced for people who have difficulty preparing a meal because of disability or frailty and who have no one to help.
For more information email or telephone 0192 333030.

Disabled facilities grant
If you are disabled you may be eligible for a disabled facilities grant to adapt your home.  These grants can assist with installing stair lifts, providing ramps, widening doors, or adapting the bathroom, kitchen or WC.  To apply for this grant, contact Hertfordshire County Council and arrange for an occupational therapist to visit and carry out an assessment.  If changes are needed, the occupational therapist will then contact the Council's environmental health team to apply for a grant.  When making a decision, the Council will look at your income and capital to decide how much, if anything, you will have to contribute towards the cost of the work.
For more information contact Hertfordshire County Council's health and community services department on 0300 123 4040, minicom 01438 737599, email or visit the HertsDirect website.

Keeping warm in winter
Many older people experience problems with keeping warm in the winter months, particularly as fuel prices continue to increase.
If you are aged over 63 you should receive the Government's Winter Fuel Payment.  Find out how to claim at the Government website.
Advice on staying warm in winter, energy efficiency and energy saving tips can be obtained from any of the Council's One Stop Shops (Wolsey Hall in Cheshunt, Hoddesdon Library and Waltham Cross High Street).  You can also contact the Energy Advice Centre on 0800 512012, or visit the Energy Saving Trust website or call 0300 123 1234.
