The Council works with landlords to encourage high standards of repair and management in rented accommodation.
Although many landlords already have well-managed properties, others may need help and advice to enable them to meet their legal obligations.
Where properties fall below minimum standards and are not safe, we will enforce the legal standards which apply.
Letting a property
If you rent out a property or are planning to do so, the Government has produced a guide to help you meet your legal responsbilities.
In particular, landlords must ensure there is a smoke alarm on each storey of their property and where necessary a carbon monoxide alarm.
Houses in multiple occupation (HMO)
An HMO is a house or flat occupied by three or more people forming two or more households who share facilities such as a kitchen or bathroom.
For HMOs, there are additional legal requirements regarding fire safety, amenities and in some circumstances a licence is required.
Help with finding tenants
The Council is interested in hearing from landlords willing to let their properties to households on the housing waiting list through its Simple Lets scheme.
