Flooding
In the case of a flood, most support is provided by the County Council. However, you can find all the necessary guidance linked below so you know how to be prepared for a flood, and what to do in the event of flooding.
Be prepared
You can sign up for flood warnings at the gov.uk website and also check your long-term flood risk. Another option is to follow the Environment Agency for updates using @EnvAgencySE.
The Met Office will always provide guidance through the National Severe Weather Warning Service, along with a map of national weather warnings.
If you need an immediate update, cou can also call Floodline on 0345 988 1188.
Report a flood
- If you are in danger from a flood or your home is at risk of immediate flooding, call 999.
- Report a flooded road or footway, or property damaged by flooding to Hertfordshire County Council.
- If flooding is being caused by blocked sewers or burst water mains, contact your water company.
- Call the Environment Agency if a flood is being caused by a main river.
Responding to a flood
Sandbags: Homeowners are responsible for protecting their properties in the event of a flood, the Council does not provide sandbags to residents.

If your home has been affected by severe flooding, here are the next steps...
- Call your Insurance Company to tell them what has happened and follow their advice.
- Contact the gas, electricity and water companies; you will need to have your supplies checked before you turn them back on.
- Open your doors, windows and air vents to ventilate your property. Remember to make sure that your property is secure when you leave it.
- Clean taps and run them for a few minutes before using the water. It is unlikely that mains tap water will be contaminated but do check with the water company if you are at all concerned. If you are in any doubt boil drinking/cooking water before consumption.
Do not turn on any electrical items. Make sure they have dried out and been checked first.
Information on health issues with flooding is available from the GOV website. The National Flood Forum has advice and guidance on what to do if you've been flooded and recovering your home.
